Vol. 3:Respect the Sanctuary – The Unwritten Codes and Professional Etiquette of Comiket
Comiket is more than an event; it is a "Sanctuary" with its own unwritten codes. To succeed here, you must respect the community’s unique etiquette. We explore the essential manners for transactions and photography to ensure your experience is both respectful and elite.
Comiket is not a commercial event; it is a community founded on the principle that "all participants are volunteers." Therefore, no matter how high one's social status or VIP standing may be, ignoring the local rules—the "Rules of the Game"—is strictly unacceptable.
While there are numerous regulations, let us outline the three most critical rules.
① When purchasing dōjinshi (original comics) from individual creators Japan is a world leader in high-tech, yet transactions with circle booths at Comiket are still predominantly conducted in cash. Preparing 1,000-yen bills and small change to ensure the creator doesn't have to provide change is the ultimate sign of respect.
② Regarding photography at the venue Directing a camera at talented cosplayers or creators without permission is a serious breach of etiquette. To photograph cosplayers, you must join the designated photo lines. For creators, photography may be possible if you wait in line and receive personal permission; however, you must be extremely mindful not to obstruct the flow of people or the distribution of their work. A little courtesy in your communication can dramatically improve the quality of your experience (and the chance for an autograph!).
③ Regarding health management The venue is scorching in summer and freezing in winter. With tens of thousands of people crowded together, staying hydrated and securing a place to rest is a matter of survival. Queues for food and restrooms are often incredibly long. Be sure to use the restroom beforehand and arrive fully prepared with your own food and water.
Strict adherence to these rules is mandatory.
Learning the rules is synonymous with truly loving Japanese otaku culture.
